Definition

A communications blackout is a period during which service members are restricted from contacting home — by phone, email, or any other means. Blackouts are imposed during combat operations, immediately following a significant casualty event (to allow proper notification before word spreads informally), or during sensitive operations. For military families and partners, a blackout is one of the most psychologically difficult aspects of deployment: silence that could mean anything.

In Dating & Relationships

Comms blackouts test the trust and emotional resilience of military relationships — partners who understand this reality don't panic at a sudden silence; they wait, and they hold.
