What is Tab?
A cloth identifier worn on the uniform indicating a special qualification or elite school completion.
Definition
In Army and Special Operations culture, a 'tab' is the cloth rocker worn above a unit patch on the left shoulder indicating completion of an elite qualification school: Ranger (gold 'Ranger' tab), Special Forces (gold 'Special Forces' tab), or Sapper (black 'Sapper' tab). Tabs are the most visible markers of elite training completion in the Army. The phrase 'tabbed' means a soldier has earned at least a Ranger or Special Forces tab.
In Dating & Relationships
Tabs are shorthand for what a soldier endured and achieved — in veteran culture, they communicate character, drive, and a proven ability to push through the hardest circumstances.
